Israeli Strikes on Gaza Targeting Hamas Kill 61 in 48 Hours

Israeli military airstrikes across Gaza have claimed the lives of at least 61 people in the past 48 hours, as tensions continue between Israeli forces and Hamas militants. The recent surge in violence comes almost a year into the ongoing war, with diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire and release hostages having so far failed to yield results.

On Saturday, airstrikes targeted two former schools in Gaza City and Jabalia, which were being used as shelters for displaced people. The attacks resulted in at least 12 casualties, according to Palestinian medics. The Israeli military claimed these strikes targeted Hamas operatives using the schools as cover.

In addition to the school strikes, five more individuals were killed in an airstrike on a house in Gaza City. The latest escalation has seen a total of 28 people killed on Saturday alone. The violence has been exacerbated by continued clashes between Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Fatah groups, who have employed anti-tank rockets and mortar bombs against Israeli troops.

Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire have stalled, with mediators including Qatar, Egypt, and the United States struggling to bridge the gap between the warring parties. The U.S. is preparing a new proposal, but optimism for a breakthrough remains low. CIA Director William Burns indicated that a more detailed proposal would be forthcoming, but significant obstacles remain.

The conflict has also sparked widespread protests in Israel, where tens of thousands of citizens have demonstrated against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the situation. The recent killing of six hostages by Hamas has intensified public outrage, with calls for the government to secure the release of the remaining 101 hostages.

In response to the crisis, the United Nations and local health authorities have continued a polio vaccination campaign in Gaza. This effort, which aims to immunize 640,000 children following the reemergence of polio in the region, has made progress despite the ongoing violence. The campaign is moving into the northern Gaza Strip, with a second round of vaccinations scheduled in four weeks.

The conflict, triggered by a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, has resulted in over 40,900 Palestinian deaths and nearly complete displacement of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents. Israeli forces have reported 340 soldier casualties, asserting that a significant portion of Palestinian fatalities are combatants.
