In a tragic turn of events, Palestinian health officials reported that an Israeli strike on a school in central Gaza has resulted in the loss of at least 30 lives overnight. The strike, which occurred early Thursday, targeted a school that had been repurposed as a shelter, and according to the Israeli military, was being used as a compound by Hamas.
The strike came amidst new air and ground operations launched by the Israeli military in central Gaza, marking an expansion of its ongoing offensive, initiated after Hamas' attack on October 7. The strike on the school, run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), led to the deaths of 30 people, including five children, as reported by the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah.

The hospital received the bodies of the victims, along with several wounded individuals, following the devastating strike. Videos circulating online depicted the chaos and desperation as wounded individuals were rushed into the emergency department, highlighting the overwhelming impact of the attack on Gaza's medical infrastructure.
The Israeli military claimed that the strike was necessary as the school was allegedly being used by Hamas and Islamic Jihad for their operations. However, UNRWA schools have been serving as shelters for displaced Palestinians throughout the conflict, with the majority of Gaza's population seeking refuge in these facilities.
Despite the military's assertion that precautions were taken to minimize civilian casualties, the strike resulted in a significant loss of life, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The incident underscores the urgent need for a ceasefire and a lasting resolution to the conflict, as innocent civilians continue to bear the brunt of the violence.
The international community has condemned the strike and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities to prevent further loss of life. Efforts to facilitate dialogue and negotiate a ceasefire are ongoing, but the situation remains precarious as violence continues to escalate in the region.
