Israeli Airstrikes Devastate Gaza Refugee Camps: 21 Killed in Latest Escalation

Gaza City: In a significant escalation of violence, Israeli forces launched a series of airstrikes on Gaza's historic refugee camps and northern Gaza City on Thursday. The strikes resulted in the deaths of at least 21 people, according to health officials and residents.

The bombardment targeted Zawayda town, Bureij and Nuseirat camps, and Deir-Al-Balah, which had remained the last major urban center in Gaza untouched by Israeli ground forces. In these areas alone, 16 people were killed. Gaza City in the north also saw devastating attacks, with medics reporting five fatalities from two separate strikes.

Israel Claims High-Profile Targets Hit

The Israeli military confirmed that its forces had killed two senior Islamic Jihad commanders in Gaza City airstrikes. One of the commanders was allegedly involved in the October 7 attack in southern Israel, which had escalated the ongoing conflict into a full-scale war. The military also reported uncovering several tunnels and killing numerous gunmen during the operations.

Resistance and Retaliation

In response to the Israeli airstrikes, Islamic Jihad announced that it had launched missiles targeting two southern Israeli communities. Meanwhile, the armed wing of Hamas claimed responsibility for firing mortar bombs at Israeli forces positioned in southwest Rafah, intensifying the already volatile situation.

Netanyahu’s Surprise Visit Amid Rising Tensions

In a move likely to further inflame tensions, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made an unannounced visit to troops stationed in southern Gaza on Thursday. His visit to Rafah came just hours after Israel's far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, visited Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy site. Ben-Gvir’s visit is seen as a provocative action that could potentially disrupt ongoing cease-fire negotiations.

The situation in Gaza remains critical, with international observers calling for immediate de-escalation to prevent further loss of life and humanitarian catastrophe.
