Israel has executed missile strikes against Iranian military installations in Tehran and other cities, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. This military action is described as a direct 'response' to the air strikes launched by Iran on October 1, which saw over 200 rockets and ballistic missiles targeting Israel. Those strikes were reportedly aimed at avenging the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, an ally of Iran.
Iran's response to the early morning strikes indicated that they resulted in "limited damage," yet Israeli officials asserted that these actions have granted them "wider freedom" to operate in Iranian airspace. The immediate aftermath of the strikes has led to a total shutdown of airspace in Iran, Syria, and Iraq. According to FlightRadar24, an open-source flight tracking service, no commercial aircraft are currently flying over these three nations. Despite this, Iranian authorities announced plans to resume flights following the missile attacks.

Syria reported that Israel launched air strikes from the occupied Golan Heights and from Lebanon, targeting the capital city of Damascus. In reaction to the strikes, Syria activated its air defense systems. Notably, Syria is part of the Iran-led 'Axis of Resistance,' which encompasses various Shia militias and political factions opposed to both Israel and the United States in the region.
In Iraq, officials announced that they are taking measures to ensure the safety of civil aviation in their airspace and decided to lock down their skies in response to the recent attacks. This action follows standard operational procedures in many states, intended to prevent unauthorized intrusions by enemy aircraft and to facilitate the identification of friendly aircraft by air defense systems.
Iran has signaled its readiness to retaliate against any perceived Israeli "aggression." Sources stated, "There is no doubt that Israel will face a proportional reaction for any action it takes." The Israeli military has similarly warned Iran that it will "pay a heavy price" if it escalates the situation further.
The United States has confirmed that it was informed in advance about the impending Israeli strikes, although no American personnel or assets were involved in the operation. Sean Savett, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, characterized Israel's military actions as "an exercise of self-defense" in response to Iran's ballistic missile attacks against Israel. He added, "We urge Iran to cease its attacks on Israel so that this cycle of fighting can end without further escalation."
