Israel Strikes Hezbollah Intelligence HQ in Syria, Citing Security Threats

On Monday, Israel’s military confirmed that its air force had conducted a targeted strike on Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters in Syria, marking an unusual acknowledgment of action against Syrian targets. The attack, centered on Damascus, reportedly killed two people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based war monitoring organization.

The Israeli military detailed that the aerial operation focused on Hezbollah’s Syrian branch, specifically targeting its intelligence facilities. According to Israel’s statement, the Hezbollah presence in Syria operates a network for intelligence gathering, coordination, and strategic assessment, aimed at bolstering the group's regional influence. Israeli authorities justified the strike as an effort to diminish Hezbollah’s intelligence capacity, which they view as a security threat.

The military has significantly increased its strikes on Syrian targets since intensifying its conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon, a campaign that began over a month ago. Israeli warplanes reportedly launched the operation from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights, with the airstrike taking place around 5:18 p.m. local time (14:15 GMT).

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that two Hezbollah members were killed in the strike near Sayyeda Zeinab, a neighborhood south of Damascus known for its Shiite shrine, which is protected by Iran-backed groups. The Observatory indicated that the strike targeted a residence used by Hezbollah members and Iranian Revolutionary Guard personnel located on a farm in the area.

Syria’s foreign ministry condemned the strike, claiming it had impacted “civilian areas” around Damascus and inflicted significant property damage. However, Syrian state media did not report any casualties directly, nor did it elaborate on the military affiliations of those killed.

Local witnesses described the impact of the strike, with residents reporting multiple loud explosions. Mehdi Mahfouz, a 34-year-old resident of the Sayyeda Zeinab area, recounted hearing three consecutive blasts, one of which he said was particularly forceful, followed by a large black cloud of smoke rising in the vicinity. The explosions were reportedly audible as far as the nearby Jaramana suburb, where ambulances were seen rushing toward the affected area.

An observer on the ground also noted the powerful blasts, capturing the scene as emergency response teams headed to the site. The aftermath highlights Israel’s ongoing engagement in the Syrian conflict, which began in 2011, with Israel targeting military positions and Iranian-backed fighters, including Hezbollah, in an effort to curb the influence of Iran-aligned forces in the region.
