Israel Strikes Hezbollah Commander; Iran Calls Attack 'Sinful and Cowardly

The Russian-state run TASS agency reported on Tuesday that the Russian Foreign Ministry condemned Israel’s recent strike on Beirut as a “flagrant violation of international law.” This condemnation comes in the wake of Israel’s targeted attack on the Lebanese capital, which was aimed at a senior Hezbollah commander.

The Israeli strike, which occurred after Hezbollah allegedly launched a rocket attack on the Golan Heights, has intensified regional tensions. The Golan Heights attack on Saturday resulted in the deaths of 12 children and teenagers, marking the deadliest assault on Israeli territory since the October 7 attack by Hamas from Gaza.

In response to the Beirut strike, Iran’s embassy in Lebanon strongly denounced the action, calling it “sinful and cowardly,” and criticized Israel’s aggression against the southern suburb of Beirut. The strike has raised concerns among experts about the potential for a broader regional conflict involving Hezbollah, backed by Iran, and Israel.

The United States has voiced support for Israel, affirming its stance that the Golan Heights attack was carried out by Hezbollah militants. White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre stated that the U.S. does not believe a full-scale war between Hezbollah and Israel is inevitable.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the strike on social media, stating it was a targeted operation against the commander responsible for the deaths in Majdal Shams and other Israeli civilians. According to Reuters, Lebanon’s state media reported that the Israeli strike targeted the area around Hezbollah's Shura Council in the Haret Hreik neighborhood of Beirut.
