Israel Strikes Hamas at UN School; Gaza Officials Report 3 Dead

JERUSALEM : Israel's military confirmed on Friday that its forces conducted an airstrike targeting a UN-operated school near Gaza City. This marked the second such incident within a span of two days. The strike reportedly took place at a school operated by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, located in the Al-Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza.

According to Israeli military sources, the strike was aimed at Hamas "terrorists" who were allegedly using a container on the school premises for their operations. The Hamas-run government media office reported three fatalities and seven injuries as a result of the attack.

This development follows another airstrike on Thursday, which hit a different UNRWA school in central Gaza. A local hospital confirmed that 37 individuals lost their lives in that attack.

UNRWA, playing a crucial role in aid operations in the besieged Gaza Strip, has seen many of its facilities transformed into shelters for displaced civilians during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The Israeli army has consistently accused Hamas and other Gaza militants of using civilian infrastructure such as schools and hospitals for military purposes, an allegation strongly denied by Hamas.

Responding to the latest strikes, Hamas issued a statement calling for an international investigation into what they termed as "crimes" committed by Israel. They also demanded accountability and punishment for Israeli leaders allegedly responsible.

The targeting of UNRWA facilities has raised concerns about the safety of civilians seeking refuge in these buildings. UNRWA spokeswoman Juliette Touma disclosed that over 180 of their facilities, including shelters for displaced people, have been hit since the beginning of the conflict, resulting in the deaths of more than 440 individuals seeking shelter.

Touma emphasized that UNRWA shares the coordinates of all its buildings in Gaza with all parties involved in the conflict, including the Israeli military.

The current conflict erupted following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, resulting in significant casualties on both sides. According to Israeli official figures, 1,194 people, mostly civilians, lost their lives. In response, Israel launched a retaliatory offensive, resulting in the deaths of at least 36,731 people in Gaza, predominantly civilians, as reported by the Hamas-run territory's health ministry.
