Israel has reopened the Zikim Crossing in northern Gaza to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, officials confirmed on Wednesday. The move comes after weeks of pressure from UN agencies and international organizations seeking access to the northern parts of the enclave, particularly Gaza City, which has faced severe food shortages.
The crossing, managed by COGAT—the Israeli military body overseeing aid flows—had been closed since September 12, preventing aid groups from transporting essential supplies. Although some assistance reached northern Gaza via southern routes, experts warned that it was insufficient to meet the growing humanitarian needs.
“The crossing has been opened in accordance with a directive from the political echelon,” said a statement from COGAT. “The aid will be transferred by the UN and international organizations following thorough security inspections by the Land Crossings Authority of the Ministry of Defence.”
UN humanitarian officials have repeatedly called for the reopening of northern crossings to ensure timely delivery of medical supplies, food, and essential goods to residents affected by the conflict. Reports from global hunger monitors have highlighted rising famine risks in the northern Gaza region, intensifying the urgency of aid deliveries.
The reopening of Zikim Crossing marks a critical step in easing the humanitarian crisis and demonstrates renewed coordination between Israeli authorities and international aid agencies. Aid trucks are expected to begin deliveries immediately following standard security inspections.
While the situation remains fragile, the resumption of aid access offers hope to thousands of residents facing shortages of basic necessities. International organizations have welcomed the development but continue to call for sustained and unhindered access to northern Gaza to address ongoing humanitarian needs.
