More than a year into the Gaza war, the Israeli army is facing significant challenges as its reservists become increasingly exhausted, and recruitment efforts struggle amid rising tensions. Since the onset of the conflict following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, the Israeli military has called up approximately 300,000 reservists. Alarmingly, 18% of those mobilized are men over the age of 40, a demographic that typically qualifies for exemption from military service.
In Israel, military service is compulsory for both men and women starting at the age of 18, although various exemptions exist based on personal circumstances. Currently, the country is engaged in a multi-front war, fighting Hamas in Gaza and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Since launching its ground offensive in Gaza on October 27 of last year, the Israeli military has reported the loss of 367 soldiers. Additionally, 37 soldiers have died in Lebanon since Israel commenced its ground operations there on September 30, underscoring the escalating violence on both fronts.
As the war drags on, reservists are experiencing extended periods of duty, with some expressing frustration over their inability to return to normal life for up to six consecutive months. This prolonged engagement is straining the reserve forces and raising concerns about the long-term sustainability of Israel’s military commitments. The pressure of the ongoing conflict and the call for continued military readiness have intensified discussions regarding the need for a more robust recruitment strategy to bolster the ranks of the Israeli army.
