On October 8, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the military had "taken out" Hashem Safieddine, who is believed to be the successor to slain Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, without specifically naming him at the time. This confirmation came on Tuesday, as the Israeli army stated that Safieddine, along with other Hezbollah commanders, was killed in a strike three weeks ago in a southern suburb of Beirut.
The Israeli army's statement detailed that in an attack that occurred approximately three weeks ago, Safieddine, the head of Hezbollah's Executive Council, and Ali Hussein Hazima, the head of Hezbollah's Intelligence Directorate, were both eliminated. The strike also resulted in the deaths of additional Hezbollah commanders, though specifics on their identities were not provided.
As of now, Hezbollah has not publicly responded to the Israeli army's claims regarding the deaths of their leaders. Netanyahu, in his earlier remarks to the Lebanese people, stated that Israeli forces had successfully "taken out thousands of terrorists," including both Hassan Nasrallah and his potential successors.

The Israeli air force conducted what it described as a "precise, intelligence-based strike" targeting Hezbollah's main intelligence headquarters located in Dahiyeh, a stronghold in southern Beirut. During this operation, over 25 Hezbollah militants were reportedly present, including Bilal Saib Aish, who was responsible for aerial intelligence gathering.
Safieddine was noted as a significant member of Hezbollah's decision-making body and a distant relative of Nasrallah. Following the Israeli strikes on Beirut weeks ago, he was reported to be out of contact. A source close to Hezbollah had earlier indicated that the cleric, who maintained good relations with Hezbollah's backer Iran, was the most probable candidate to succeed Nasrallah in leadership.
Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, the chief of the Israeli army, reiterated the extent of their operations, stating, "We have reached Nasrallah, his replacement, and most of Hezbollah's senior leadership," following the confirmation of Safieddine's death.
As tensions continue to escalate in the region, the implications of these developments remain a focal point for analysts and policymakers.
