ISIS, Elite Snipers, and 8 Fatalities: The Deadly Russian Prison Standoff

New Delhi: A violent uprising at the high-security IK-19 Surovikino penal colony in Russia's Volgograd region resulted in the deaths of four prison staffers on Friday. The incident began when a group of prisoners, armed with knives and claiming allegiance to ISIS, took hostages and briefly seized control of a prison section, leading to a dramatic standoff with Russian special forces.

The crisis erupted during what was intended to be a routine disciplinary commission meeting. According to reports, four inmates—Ramzidin Toshev (28), Rustamchon Navruzi (23), Nazirchon Toshov (28), and Temur Khusinov (29)—all from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, launched their assault. They attacked guards with knives, injuring several and taking eight prison employees and four fellow inmates hostage.

During the siege, images and videos circulated on social media. One disturbing image showed an inmate holding a knife over a bloodied prison guard, while another video depicted an attacker in the prison yard with a hostage covered in blood. The attackers used these videos to declare their allegiance to ISIS, framing the attack as revenge for the persecution of Muslims.

In response, Russian special forces, including heavily armed troops and elite snipers from the Rosgvardia National Guard, were swiftly deployed to the scene. The high-security prison, located in the remote town of Surovikino, about 850 kilometers south of Moscow, turned into a battleground as special forces moved in.

After hours of tense negotiations and planning, the special forces stormed the facility. Snipers killed all four attackers, effectively ending the standoff. Despite the resolution of the crisis, the attack claimed the lives of four prison employees, with three killed immediately and the fourth dying later from injuries. Several other guards and prisoners also sustained injuries, some severe.

State news agency RIA reported that the Russian National Guard's snipers, through precise action, neutralized the attackers and released the hostages. This incident follows a similar event in June at a prison in the Rostov region, where ISIS-affiliated prisoners also attempted a revolt, resulting in five prisoner deaths and one capture.

In response to the Volgograd standoff, Russian President Vladimir Putin was briefed in a virtual meeting with security chiefs, who assured that the situation did not pose an immediate threat to the civilian population. Volgograd's regional governor, Andrei Bocharov, emphasized that the Russian laws must be respected and warned against inciting ethnic discord within the country.
