The scene at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in Los Angeles turned chaotic on Thursday as police dismantled an encampment and arrested numerous pro-Palestinian protesters. Clad in helmets, police officers descended on a tent city erected at UCLA, deploying stun grenades to disperse protesters who had linked arms in an attempt to block their advance. Social media updates from the Los Angeles Police Department reported that 210 individuals were arrested at UCLA, with hundreds more arrested at other universities both overnight and throughout Thursday.
These arrests come amidst a wave of protests that have swept across numerous universities in the United States, with students rallying and setting up encampments to demonstrate against Israel's military actions in Gaza. Demonstrators have called on President Joe Biden to take decisive action to halt the violence in Gaza and have urged universities to divest from companies that support the Israeli government.
The unrest at UCLA led to the closure of the campus, which boasts nearly 52,000 students, except for limited operations on Thursday and Friday. Similar scenes unfolded in other parts of the country, including Portland, Oregon, where police entered the Portland State University library to dismantle a protest encampment. Additional arrests were made as demonstrators attempted to reclaim the space. In New Hampshire, approximately 100 protesters were arrested at Dartmouth University and the University of New Hampshire as police broke up encampments.

Meanwhile, in Mexico City, pro-Palestinian students from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) staged a solidarity protest, erecting tents outside the university's main office. Chanting "Long live free Palestine" and calling on the Mexican government to sever ties with Israel, the students joined the chorus of global voices condemning Israel's military actions in Gaza.
The protests have intensified following a deadly attack by Hamas militants on southern Israel, resulting in casualties and an Israeli offensive that has further escalated tensions and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. However, the demonstrations have also sparked controversy, with counter-protesters accusing the pro-Palestinian activists of promoting anti-Jewish sentiment. Despite these criticisms, supporters of the pro-Palestinian cause, including some Jewish individuals critical of Israeli policies, maintain that their advocacy is rooted in a commitment to human rights and justice.
