As the deadline for selecting India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad looms closer, former cricketers are actively sharing their opinions on which players should make the cut and which ones should be left out. The selection debate has intensified, particularly regarding the inclusion of Virat Kohli, with discussions revolving around his strike rate and intent. Another focal point of discussion is the future of Hardik Pandya, the sole prominent pace-bowling all-rounder in the Indian team, whose recent performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 have been under scrutiny.

Amidst this ongoing dialogue, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has revealed his 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup event, scheduled for June.

For the top-order batting positions, Irfan has chosen Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Virat Kohli. Any of these players can fill the opening slots, with Shubman Gill included as a reserve option. In total, Irfan has named four players for the two opening positions, with both Kohli and Gill capable of batting at No. 3 as well.

Moving on to the middle-order, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Rinku Singh, and Shivam Dube have been assigned roles. Hardik Pandya is the sole pace-bowling all-rounder in the squad, while Dube's seam bowling capabilities remain unutilized, as evidenced by his lack of bowling opportunities with the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Notably, Sanju Samson has been omitted from the squad, leaving Pant as the sole wicket-keeper. KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are among the prominent players who did not make the cut.

In terms of spin options, Ravindra Jadeja is the only spin-bowling all-rounder selected, accompanied by Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav as specialist spinners. The absence of Ravi Bishnoi and Varun Chakravarthy from the squad is noteworthy.

In the pace bowling department, Jasprit Bumrah leads the pack, supported by Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh. While discussions surrounding other pacers like T Natarajan, Mayank Yadav, and Khaleel Ahmed have taken place, Irfan has opted for a tried-and-tested combination among pacers.
