Karachi: Four Pakistanis were killed and two others injured late Tuesday night when Iranian forces opened fire in the restive southwestern province of Balochistan, Pakistan, according to officials. The incident took place near the Pakistan-Iran border in Washuk District, as confirmed by Umar Jamali, the additional deputy commissioner.
Naeem Umrani, the deputy commissioner of Washuk, stated that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the shooting.
This incident comes in the context of recent efforts to mend ties between Pakistan and Iran. Former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi visited Pakistan in April for a three-day official visit, aiming to normalize relations after a series of unprecedented tit-for-tat military strikes earlier this year. Raisi's visit was seen as a significant step towards improving diplomatic relations with Islamabad.

Historically, Iran and Pakistan have had a complex relationship, with occasional tensions and conflicts. The missile strikes in January marked the most serious incidents in years, prompting Pakistan to recall its ambassador to Tehran and halt high-level diplomatic and trade engagements. In response, both nations made swift efforts to de-escalate tensions, leading to mutual assurances of respecting each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. They also pledged to enhance security cooperation and requested their envoys to return to their respective posts.
The January conflicts involved Pakistan targeting bases of the separatist Baloch Liberation Front and Baloch Liberation Army, while Iran targeted militants from the Jaish al-Adl (JAA) group. These militant groups are active in regions spanning Pakistan's southwestern province of Balochistan and Iran's southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province, both of which are rich in minerals but remain largely underdeveloped and troubled by unrest.
The recent shooting near the border adds to the tension in these volatile regions, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by both countries in maintaining stability and security.
