Iran has formally urged the United Nations to take decisive action against the United States and Israel, holding both nations responsible for a series of military strikes targeting Iranian nuclear sites in June. The appeal comes amid recent signals from Washington and Tehran showing a tentative openness to renewed dialogue.
In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the UN Security Council, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi demanded that both Washington and Tel Aviv be held accountable for what he termed “acts of aggression” against Iran. Araghchi called for reparations, including restitution and compensation for damages resulting from the attacks.
Araghchi cited former US President Donald Trump’s public admission on November 6 that he had authorized Israel’s initial strike on Iranian nuclear facilities as proof of direct US involvement. “President Trump and other US officials bear criminal responsibility for the June 13 attacks,” Araghchi wrote, urging the UN to act under international law.
The June strikes, according to Iranian reports, resulted in the deaths of more than 900 people, including senior military officials. Tehran has emphasized that the attacks represented a direct military operation orchestrated by the United States, rather than mere support for Israel, and has called for justice for those affected.
Despite this confrontation, both the US and Iran have expressed interest in diplomatic engagement. Trump stated last month that the US was prepared to negotiate “when Tehran is ready,” emphasizing a “hand of friendship and cooperation.” Araghchi’s deputy also reiterated Iran’s continued interest in a peaceful nuclear agreement with Washington.
However, tensions remain high, with Iran insisting that the UN must respond to what it describes as an “unlawful act of war” carried out by the US and Israel. The case underscores ongoing volatility in the region as diplomatic channels are cautiously explored.
