Iran Sees Trump's Victory as Chance to Review Past Policies

Iran has responded to Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election, suggesting that it could offer an opportunity for the United States to review past “wrong policies.” Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated that Iran had suffered from the impact of U.S. policies during Trump’s first term, and the result of the election presented a chance to reassess those approaches.

Trump, who won the election against U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, had pursued a hardline strategy toward Iran, known as "maximum pressure," during his first term. This included pulling the U.S. out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and re-imposing severe sanctions on the country. Under Trump's leadership, tensions between the two nations escalated, particularly following the 2020 U.S. airstrike that killed General Qasem Soleimani, a prominent leader of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Iran and the U.S. have been adversaries since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which saw the overthrow of the U.S.-backed shah and the establishment of the Islamic state. However, relations became even more strained during Trump's tenure, culminating in the high-profile killing of Soleimani.

Before Trump’s victory was confirmed, Iran had downplayed the significance of the U.S. election, with spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani stating that the fundamental policies between the U.S. and Iran would not change, regardless of the election outcome. "The general policies of the United States and Iran are fixed," she remarked, noting that Iran had already set its plans to ensure the well-being of its people.

In conclusion, while the election result represents a potential opportunity for the U.S. to reconsider its past actions, Iranian officials maintain that their strategic approach will remain constant, regardless of the changes in U.S. leadership.
