On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals and the abduction of around 250 hostages. This assault marked a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel.
In the aftermath of this attack, Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations in New York issued a strong denial of claims linking Tehran to Hamas' actions. This response came amid reports that the Israeli government had obtained minutes from Hamas' secret meetings, which allegedly indicated that Tehran was aware of the group’s plans for the assault.
In a statement, the Iranian mission addressed inquiries from various media outlets concerning Israel's assertions. The reports suggested that Hamas officials in Doha had indicated there was no foreknowledge of the operation and that the attack was entirely orchestrated by Hamas' military wing in Gaza. The Iranian mission firmly stated, "Any claim aiming to partially or entirely link the operation to Iran or Hezbollah is invalid and comes from fabricated documents."

Further details indicated that the seized documents provided a comprehensive record of the planning leading up to the October 7 attack. The documents reportedly included the determination of Yahya Sinwar, Hamas' current political bureau chief, to involve the group's allies, Iran and Hezbollah, in the operation or at least secure their commitment to a broader conflict with Israel should Hamas initiate a surprise cross-border raid.
Iranian officials have consistently maintained that, while the country supports Palestinian resistance movements, including Hamas, it had no prior knowledge of the attack on Israel and did not participate in its execution. This stance aligns with Iran's broader narrative of support for Palestinian causes, emphasizing their commitment to resisting Israeli actions without direct involvement in specific military operations.
In response to the October 7 attack, the Israeli military has launched a large-scale offensive against Gaza, intensifying the already volatile situation in the region and raising concerns about further escalation of violence.
