The highly-anticipated Indian Premier League is scheduled to commence on March 22, held entirely in India despite concurrent general elections, as confirmed by league chairman Arun Dhumal to PTI on Tuesday. With elections expected in April and May, the full schedule for the IPL's 17th edition is pending, with only the first 15 days set for announcement initially. Dhumal mentioned close coordination with government agencies and the decision for the remaining games hinging on general election dates. The Lok Sabha polls' dates are anticipated next month.
"We are looking at a March 22 start for the tournament. We are working closely with the government agencies and we will first release the initial schedule. The entire tournament will be held in India," said Dhumal.
The IPL was entirely held overseas (South Africa) in 2009 and partially in the UAE in 2014 due to general elections. However, in 2019, the tournament took place in India despite elections.
With the T20 World Cup following closely after the IPL, the final is likely to be held on May 26.
India's first World Cup match against Ireland is on June 5 in New York, starting the ICC showpiece that kicks off with the USA and Canada clash on June 1.
Following tradition, the IPL opener will feature last year's finalists, with the Chennai Super Kings facing off against the Gujarat Titans.
The 2024 season's players' auction took place in December, seeing Australian pacer Mitchell Starc become the league's most expensive player after being bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 24.75 crore.
