Rohit Sharma's golden duck marked another setback for the Mumbai Indians as they faced their third consecutive defeat in IPL 2024 against the Rajasthan Royals on Monday.
The dismissal occurred in the very first over of the match, bowled by Trent Boult. Rohit Sharma, known for his batting prowess, was expected to lead from the front, but his early departure set the tone for Mumbai's innings. Playing away from his body, Rohit edged the fifth ball to wicketkeeper Sanju Samson, who took a sharp catch behind the stumps to complete the dismissal.

Former England cricketer Stuart Broad, analyzing the dismissal on Star Sports, commended Rajasthan Royals' strategic planning behind the wicket. He highlighted the precision in their execution and the celebration that followed, indicating meticulous planning. Broad noted that Rohit had little to do about the delivery and suggested that the dismissal might lead the batter to contemplate philosophically about the situation.
Despite the setback, Rohit Sharma found himself equalling an unwanted record for the most ducks in the history of IPL 2024. His dismissal marked his 17th duck in IPL history, levelling the record held by Dinesh Karthik. Following Rohit, players like Glenn Maxwell, Piyush Chawla, Mandeep Singh, and Sunil Narine have all faced 15 ducks in their IPL careers.
As the match progressed, Mumbai Indians struggled to recover, managing to post only 125/9 in their allotted overs. The relentless spells from Trent Boult, Nandre Burger, and Yuzvendra Chahal dismantled Mumbai's batting order. Chahal and Boult both secured three wickets each, while Burger claimed two scalps. Despite efforts from captain Hardik Pandya, who top-scored with 34 runs off 21 deliveries, and Tilak Varma's crucial knock of 32 runs, Mumbai's total remained their lowest in the IPL.
Rajasthan Royals' bowlers dominated the Mumbai Indians' batting lineup, securing a convincing victory and furthering Mumbai's struggles in IPL 2024.
