Interpol Chief Candidate Accused of Kidnapping Indian Businessmen

Mubita Nawa, a prominent candidate for the Interpol chief position, is embroiled in controversy following allegations of kidnapping and extortion linked to a high-profile £105 million court case involving Indian businessmen Vinod and Uddit Sadhu.

According to reports, lawyers representing Vinod and Uddit Sadhu, owners of Sun Pharmaceuticals, have formally written to Interpol alleging Nawa's involvement in their kidnapping and extortion incident in September 2022. The allegations were reported by the Independent.

Nawa, currently serving as Zambia's deputy commissioner of police, is among four candidates shortlisted for the Interpol secretary general position, backed by African Union member states.

The Sadhus were awarded £105 million by Zambia's Supreme Court in 2022 for overpayment on a loan, but they claim they have not received the payment from the Zambian government. They allege they have faced "extreme and illegal pressure" to relinquish the payment, reportedly orchestrated by individuals close to the administration, including Nawa and his associates.

Legal proceedings have been initiated by the Sadhus against those involved in the 2022 incident, with Nawa expected to be a critical witness in the case.

According to details provided in the letter by the UK-based Leverets Group, the Sadhus were allegedly ambushed by individuals posing as police officers. They were reportedly threatened and coerced, stating they were "bundled into an unmarked van before being taken to a private residence." One of the captives managed to alert authorities using a concealed mobile phone.

Subsequently, the Sadhus were transferred to a police station where they claim Nawa, then deputy director of the Zambian Criminal Investigation Department (CID), was involved in their mistreatment. The letter accused Nawa of being among "new kidnappers, assailants, and extortionists."

Zambian police have refuted these accusations, dismissing them as "malicious allegations" propagated by the Sadhus' legal representatives. They have countered by alleging that the Sadhus themselves are suspects in a fraud investigation, accusing them of illicitly altering the ownership structure of Sun Pharmaceuticals.

The Zambian police chief categorically denied the allegations against Mubita Nawa, asserting them to be false and aimed at tarnishing his reputation ahead of the Interpol secretary general elections.

As the allegations unfold, the case has garnered significant international attention, casting a shadow over Nawa's candidacy for one of the most prestigious positions in international law enforcement.
