Indonesia's Ruang volcano unleashed "explosive" streams of glowing lava into the night sky on Tuesday, accompanied by dramatic flashes of lightning illuminating its crater. The eruption prompted authorities to elevate the alert status and shut down a nearby airport.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation raised the alert status to the highest level after the eruption, urging residents to steer clear of the volcano. Videos shared by Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency revealed lightning strikes above Ruang's crater, with fiery red clouds of lava and rocks erupting into the atmosphere and showering the surrounding area.

The eruption column soared 2 km high, prompting authorities to evacuate residents within a 6-km radius due to the risk of further "explosive eruptions." The eruption coincided with increased seismic activity around the volcano, particularly in the number of deep volcanic earthquakes.

This eruption follows a series earlier this month that necessitated the evacuation of hundreds and the closure of Manado's Sam Ratulangi airport. The recent eruptions also caused damage to homes. Once again, authorities shuttered the airport on Tuesday due to potential volcanic ash spread, with the closure expected to last until noon Wednesday.

Ruang Island, located approximately 100 km from Manado, is home to over 800 residents, most of whom were evacuated following the recent eruptions. The alert status was downgraded to level 3 last week before being raised to level 4 again on Tuesday.

Indonesia, situated along the "Pacific Ring of Fire," experiences high seismic activity where multiple tectonic plates converge.
