A 21-year-old student from Nepal, Muna Pandey, was tragically shot dead by an Indian-origin man during a robbery at her apartment in Houston, Texas, authorities confirmed on Saturday. The suspect, 52-year-old Bobby Sinh Shah, has been apprehended and charged with murder.
Pandey, who was attending Houston Community College, was found with multiple gunshot wounds inside her apartment at around 5:30 PM on Monday, according to the Houston Police Department. The discovery was made after the apartment complex staff received an anonymous call reporting a body inside the residence. Upon their arrival, police officers declared Pandey dead at the scene.
In the days following the incident, authorities released a photograph of Shah, captured on CCTV footage as he exited Pandey's apartment on Saturday. He was subsequently arrested later that day during a routine traffic stop and has since been charged with her murder.

Muna Pandey had moved to the United States from Nepal in 2021 to pursue her studies at Houston Community College. Her mother, who resides in Nepal, had been desperately trying to contact her daughter for days before the grim discovery was made. A representative from the Nepalese Association of Houston relayed to the New York Post that Pandey’s mother grew increasingly concerned when she noticed her daughter's phone had gone offline after being online continuously until Saturday night.
"She had three gunshot wounds and was found lying face down on her bed," the representative said, adding that Pandey was her mother’s only child. The association is now collaborating with the Nepal Consulate to arrange for Pandey's mother to travel to Houston for the funeral.
A GoFundMe page has been established to assist with the costs of Muna Pandey's funeral and to facilitate her mother’s journey to the United States. The page, which has raised nearly $30,000, appeals to the community for support, stating, "We are reaching out to you, our community, to help bring Anita to the United States so she can say goodbye to her only child and give Muna the farewell she deserves. The funds raised will be used to cover the costs of Muna's funeral and to bring her mother to Houston to be with her daughter's body for the final rituals."
The tragic loss of Muna Pandey has shocked the community, and efforts are ongoing to ensure that her mother can be with her daughter one last time.
