Indian American Student Sameer Kamath's Suicide Confirmed by US Coroner

Sameer Kamath, a 23-year-old Indian-American doctoral student at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, was discovered dead at Crow’s Grove Nature Preserve. The Warren County Coroner, Justin Brummett, confirmed that Kamath's death, which occurred on Monday, February 5, was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Kamath, a US citizen, had completed his master's degree in mechanical engineering at Purdue in August 2023 and was continuing his studies in the same department.

The preliminary cause of death, as stated in a press release by Coroner Brummett, is a "gunshot wound of the head," and it has been ruled as a suicide. A forensic autopsy has been conducted, and the toxicology report is pending.

Kamath's family was informed of the results before the public release, according to the coroner's office. The investigation is ongoing, with the Warren County Coroner's Office collaborating with various local and federal agencies, including the Warren County Sheriff's Office and Purdue University Administration.

The tragic incident adds to a concerning trend at Purdue University, where in less than two years, three student deaths have occurred. Neel Acharya, an Indian student, was found dead on the Purdue campus after going missing. The cause of his death is under investigation. In 2022, another Indian-origin student, Varun Manish Chheda, was murdered by a fellow student, Ji Min ‘Jimmy’ Sha. Sha, a 22-year-old junior cybersecurity major, was arrested on murder charges, and Chheda succumbed to "multiple sharp force traumatic injuries
