Indian-American Doctor Convicted in $5.4M Medicare Scam

Indian-American physician Adarsh Gupta, residing in Sewell, New Jersey, has been found guilty by a federal jury in the United States for orchestrating a sophisticated Medicare fraud scheme. The conviction stems from Gupta's involvement in a multi-million dollar fraud operation, wherein he knowingly submitted fraudulent claims totaling over $5.4 million to Medicare.

The case against Gupta unfolded during a trial where prosecutors presented compelling evidence of his fraudulent activities. According to court documents and testimonies, Gupta's fraudulent scheme revolved around prescribing orthotic braces to Medicare beneficiaries under false pretenses. These beneficiaries, often elderly and vulnerable, were targeted by telemarketers who persuaded them to accept unnecessary orthotic braces.

In his role, Gupta would sign off on thousands of these prescriptions without conducting proper medical evaluations or diagnosing the beneficiaries' actual needs. Shockingly, evidence revealed instances where Gupta prescribed braces to individuals who were clearly unsuitable candidates, including one egregious case where he prescribed a knee brace to a person with amputated legs.

Prosecutors argued that Gupta's actions were driven solely by financial gain, as each fraudulent prescription served as a catalyst for brace supply companies to bill Medicare exorbitant amounts. This exploitation of Medicare funds not only defrauded the government but also compromised the well-being of Medicare beneficiaries who received unnecessary medical equipment.

Gupta's conviction on three counts of healthcare fraud and two counts of false statements relating to healthcare matters underscores the severity of his offenses. Each count carries significant penalties, with Gupta facing a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for each healthcare fraud charge and up to five years for each false statement charge.

The sentencing phase of Gupta's case is scheduled for October 8, where the court will determine the appropriate punishment for his egregious actions. The outcome of this trial serves as a stark reminder of the consequences awaiting those who seek to exploit and defraud essential healthcare programs for personal gain.
