Former Indian cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth has criticized the Indian selection committee for excluding Rinku Singh from the 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, calling it a "rubbish" decision. Singh, who made his T20 debut in 2023 against Ireland, has played 15 matches and 11 innings, scoring 356 runs at a strike rate of 176.24. His last appearance for India was against Afghanistan in January 2024.
Srikkanth highlighted Singh's match-winning performance, particularly his unbeaten 69-run knock against Afghanistan in the 3rd T20I. He questioned the selection of four spinners in the squad and accused the selectors of making Singh a "scapegoat" to please certain individuals.
Expressing his discontent on his official YouTube channel, Srikkanth emphasized Singh's consistent performance and argued that he deserved a place in the squad over other players, even suggesting dropping Yashasvi Jaiswal if necessary.
India, led by Rohit Sharma, will kick off their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5, 2024, at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Their subsequent matches include a high-profile encounter against Pakistan on June 9, 2024, at the same venue, followed by games against the USA and Canada on June 12 and 15 respectively.
The Indian squad for the tournament includes star players like Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and Sanju Samson as wicket-keepers. Notable inclusions are also Shubman Gill, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan as reserved players.
