On August 15, 2024, New Delhi hosted the 78th Independence Day celebrations with a notable presence of 6,000 special guests, including the Indian contingent for the Paris Olympics, student beneficiaries of the Atal Innovation Mission, Border Roads Organisation workers, and sarpanches. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the festivities by unfurling the national flag for the 11th consecutive time at the Red Fort.
To ensure maximum security during the event, over 10,000 police personnel were deployed across India. In Delhi, security was heightened with the deployment of facial recognition cameras, snipers, and elite SWAT commandos. In Chhattisgarh's Maoist-affected Bastar region, security camps were established in 13 villages where the Tricolour was hoisted for the first time to mark Independence Day. In Delhi, 700 AI-based facial recognition CCTV cameras with advanced pan-tilt-zoom capabilities were installed to monitor the area and identify individuals from a distance.
