Rising Concerns in UAE as Prolonged Social Media Usage Amplifies Children's Challenges
Children in the UAE, spending around 3 hours daily on social media, face heightened issues like anxiety, attention difficulties, academic struggles, and speech delays. Experts link these challenges to dopamine release in the brain triggered by social media engagement, akin to the pleasure in gambling or substance use.
With an average of 8.4 social media accounts per user in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena), the region sees some of the highest adoption rates. TikTok, particularly popular in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and Iraq, contributes to extended screen time.
Dr. Adnan Ahmadiazad, a specialist psychiatrist, highlights the varying time spent by children on social media, with some teens exceeding 6-8 hours daily. The COVID-19 pandemic escalated reliance on social media, prompting parents to relax control, leading to increased behavioral issues.
Medics report complaints of reduced attention span, academic decline, and heightened aggression among children. Some exhibit oppositional defiant disorder or conduct disorder tendencies, while diagnoses of ADHD and speech delay increase due to excessive screen time.
Girish Hemnani, a life coach in Dubai, stresses the need for collective responsibility in families and communities to address social media addiction. He emphasizes the importance of shared responsibility for the collective evolution required to break free from these modern challenges
