In Riyadh, the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) unveiled the Kingdom's soaring air transport sector accomplishments in 2023. Notably, passenger traffic skyrocketed to an unprecedented 112 million, marking a remarkable 26 percent surge compared to 2022 figures and surpassing pre-pandemic levels by over 8 percent, as recorded in 2019. This exceptional growth underscores the resilient recovery of the transportation sector following the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to GACA's comprehensive air traffic performance report, there was a corresponding surge in flight activity across the Kingdom's airports. Approximately 815,000 flight movements were logged in 2023, reflecting a substantial 16 percent increase from the previous year.
International travel witnessed a significant upswing, with passenger numbers peaking at approximately 61 million and flight movements exceeding 394,000. King Abdulaziz International Airport emerged as the country's busiest aviation hub, boasting an average of 30 flights per hour. Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport closely followed suit with 27 flights per hour, while King Fahd International Airport secured the third spot with 11 flights per hour.
Meanwhile, domestic travel showcased a positive trajectory, with passenger volume on domestic routes reaching 51 million. This surge was facilitated by over 421,000 domestic flights departing from various airports across the Kingdom.
In the realm of air cargo transportation, a steady increase of over 7 percent was observed in 2023, with total cargo volume exceeding 918,000 tons compared to 854,000 tons in the preceding year.
GACA serves as the regulatory cornerstone for Saudi Arabia's air transport sector, playing a pivotal role in establishing and enforcing executive regulations, fostering collaboration with relevant stakeholders, and incessantly striving to elevate the quality of air travel services and enhance the overall passenger experience. Anchored by a strategic vision aimed at shaping the future of the sector, GACA endeavors to cultivate a competitive and enticing investment landscape, with a steadfast commitment to positioning Saudi Arabia as a preeminent regional and global leader in air travel. These efforts align closely with the ambitious objectives outlined in Vision 2030, the Kingdom's transformative development roadmap, which aims to double air transport capacity by 2030.
