Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been prohibited from meeting his family, legal team, and party leaders until October 18. This decision by the Punjab government, announced on Monday, is attributed to "security concerns," particularly in light of ongoing anti-government protests across various cities in Pakistan.
Since August 2023, Khan has been imprisoned in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail on multiple charges. His detention has sparked significant political unrest, leading to widespread protests by his supporters in cities including Islamabad, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has expressed concerns that there may be attempts to disrupt the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, which is set to take place on October 15 and 16 in Islamabad. In light of these concerns, the government is committed to ensuring that any plans to hinder the summit are thwarted. "We will not allow any disruptions during this crucial event," Naqvi stated.

According to an official from the Punjab government, the ban on Khan's meetings was implemented with the upcoming SCO summit in mind. The coalition government, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has accused Khan's supporters of orchestrating protests to sabotage the summit's proceedings. To enhance security for the event, the Pakistan Army has been deployed.
In a related development, six staff members from Adiala Jail were arrested by security agencies for allegedly providing assistance to Imran Khan. This action underscores the heightened security measures being taken in response to the current political climate.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Khan announced that his legal team plans to file a petition in court to challenge the ban on meetings with him and his wife, Bushra Bibi. The spokesperson highlighted that Justice Sardar Ijaz of the Islamabad High Court had previously directed authorities to facilitate meetings via video link if in-person visits were not feasible. Given the number of legal cases Khan is dealing with, the spokesperson emphasized the necessity for ongoing legal consultations.
As protests continue to unfold across Pakistan, the situation remains tense, with Khan's supporters actively voicing their dissent against the government. The upcoming SCO summit and the political maneuvers surrounding it are poised to further influence the unfolding events in the region.
