Amidst soaring temperatures, the quest for refreshment often leads many to indulge in juices and cold drinks, with sugarcane juice standing out as a popular choice. However, recent warnings issued by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have cast a shadow over this seemingly innocuous beverage due to its high sugar content, prompting calls for moderation in consumption to safeguard health.
The ICMR, in conjunction with the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), has unveiled 17 new guidelines aimed at promoting healthier dietary habits. Central to these recommendations is the cautionary note regarding the excessive sugar levels found in sugarcane juice, which typically contains 13-15 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters. Given its widespread consumption in India, particularly during the scorching summer months, the ICMR has underscored the imperative of limiting sugarcane juice intake to mitigate health risks associated with excessive sugar consumption.

Medical experts advocate for adhering to daily sugar intake limits, with adults advised to consume no more than 30 grams of free sugar, while children aged 7 to 10 should restrict their intake to 24 grams. In light of these guidelines, the ICMR advocates for prioritizing whole fruits over fruit juices, citing their superior fiber and nutrient content as a healthier alternative.
Soft drinks, a ubiquitous presence in modern diets, have also come under scrutiny, with the ICMR cautioning against their consumption. Laden with sugar, artificial sweeteners, edible acids, and artificial flavors, these beverages pose health risks when consumed in excess. The ICMR unequivocally asserts that soft drinks are not substitutes for water or fresh fruits, urging individuals to explore healthier alternatives such as buttermilk, lemon water, whole fruit juice (without added sugar), and coconut water.
Furthermore, the guidelines issued by the ICMR underscore the potential health risks associated with excessive tea and coffee consumption, primarily attributable to their caffeine content. Caffeine intake should be moderated, with daily limits set at 300 mg. Additionally, the ICMR advises against consuming tea or coffee at least an hour before and after meals to avoid interference with iron absorption.
In advocating for a balanced diet, the ICMR emphasizes the importance of incorporating a diverse array of food groups, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and seafood, while limiting oil, sugar, and salt intake. By adhering to these recommendations, individuals can make informed dietary choices and mitigate potential health risks associated with high sugar and caffeine consumption, thus fostering a culture of wellness and vitality.
