The disaster struck while a tour group of 25, comprised of several nationalities and accompanied by a guide, was exploring the Breidamerkurjokull glacier.

According to a police statement, the cave's collapse left four people trapped under the ice. Of these, two individuals were initially recovered, though one was pronounced dead at the scene. The surviving person was airlifted to a hospital and is currently reported to be in stable condition.
