In Scranton, Pennsylvania, the historic Scranton Army Ammunition Plant (SCAAP) plays a pivotal role in producing war machinery for modern conflicts, particularly in supporting Ukraine's defense efforts against Russia's invasion. Originally established in 1908 for steam locomotive construction, SCAAP transitioned to munitions production after being acquired by the US government in 1953. Today, within its aged brick buildings, dated machinery continues to manufacture critical components, such as steel tubes for 155 mm caliber shells, essential for Ukraine's defense strategy.

Led by Richard Hansen, a retired US Navy veteran, SCAAP operates with equipment dating back to the Korean War era. Despite its lack of modern technology, the plant remains integral to national defense efforts. Visitors navigating the labyrinthine basement witness the labor-intensive production process, enduring deafening noise and searing heat while observing meticulous quality control measures. Each steel tube undergoes rigorous testing and treatment to ensure structural integrity, with meticulous attention paid to flaw detection and defect identification.
While Hansen remains discreet about production specifics and battlefield applications, SCAAP's current contract aims to produce 24,000 tubes monthly until 2027. Owned by the government and contracted with General Dynamics, SCAAP employs 900 individuals across its three operational sites in eastern Pennsylvania. Although production levels haven't surged due to the Ukrainian conflict, a $418 million modernization plan is underway to enhance efficiency and capacity. This strategic initiative, coupled with additional contracts with other contractors, underscores the nation's commitment to bolstering artillery support for Ukraine amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
