A tragic incident unfolded in southern China's Guangdong province early Wednesday morning as part of a highway collapsed, claiming the lives of at least 19 people, according to state media reports. The catastrophe occurred on a stretch of road between Meizhou city and Dabu county, causing 18 vehicles to become trapped beneath the rubble.
State broadcaster CCTV disclosed that the collapse occurred around 2:10 am local time, trapping a total of 49 individuals within the wreckage. By mid-morning, the death toll had risen to 19, with 30 others receiving urgent medical attention at nearby hospitals. While their injuries were severe, CCTV noted that their lives were not currently in jeopardy.

Videos circulated on social media depicted a harrowing scene of destruction, with a smoking pile of wrecked vehicles lying at the bottom of a deep muddy pit where the highway had once stood. Emergency responders and firefighters could be seen working tirelessly amidst the debris, their efforts hampered by the treacherous conditions.
Authorities swiftly mobilized a massive rescue operation, dispatching approximately 500 personnel from various departments including public security, emergency response, firefighting, and mining rescue. Despite their concerted efforts, the scale of the disaster posed significant challenges to the rescue teams.
The cause of the road collapse remains under investigation, yet the incident adds to a series of tragic events that have afflicted Guangdong province in recent weeks. Heavy rains have battered the region, triggering deadly floods, while a tornado claimed the lives of five people in the city of Guangzhou just days earlier.
China's extensive highway network, spanning diverse terrains and climates, is susceptible to accidents and infrastructure failures. Safety standards, though improving, continue to pose challenges, contributing to the frequency of road accidents across the country.
As authorities work to ascertain the cause of the highway collapse and facilitate rescue efforts, the incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks inherent in maintaining and traversing China's vast transportation networks.
