An American family's Labor Day picnic at Malibu Creek State Park in California turned into a harrowing experience when their 5-year-old son was attacked by a mountain lion. The incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon, just before 4:30 p.m., at the Tapia Day Use Area of the park, located in Calabasas, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office.
The family, along with several other adults and children, were enjoying a relaxing day at the park when the unthinkable happened. Out of nowhere, a mountain lion emerged and seized the young boy by the head, attempting to drag him away. Panic ensued as the child's family and nearby picnickers realized what was happening.
The boy's father, acting on pure instinct and adrenaline, immediately sprang into action. Witnesses reported that he ran toward the mountain lion, grabbing it with his bare hands in a desperate bid to save his son. The father fought off the predator, refusing to let it take his child. Miraculously, the mountain lion eventually released its grip, and the boy was saved from what could have been a fatal encounter.
The victim's aunt, who asked to remain anonymous, recounted the terrifying moments in a phone interview. "Somebody screamed the baby's name, and his dad started running," she said. "The father grabbed the mountain lion with his hands, and he just fought. Then the mountain lion let go."
The area where the attack took place was relatively busy, with approximately 40 people in the vicinity at the time. Some witnesses described the mountain lion as unusually bold and unafraid, which added to the shock of the incident. The boy was quickly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. His condition, while serious, is reportedly stable.
Mountain lions, also known as cougars, panthers, or pumas, are native to the region and can be formidable predators. According to the US Department of Agriculture, these big cats can grow to over 8 feet in length, from nose to tail, and weigh between 130 and 150 pounds. Their habitats range from deserts to coastal forests, and they are known to occupy territories that span from sea level to elevations of 10,000 feet. Typically, an adult male's territory can cover more than 100 square miles, while females tend to have smaller ranges, usually between 20 and 60 square miles.
The attack serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise in natural settings, even in places as seemingly tranquil as a state park. Local authorities have urged visitors to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, particularly in areas known to be inhabited by wildlife. The mountain lion involved in this attack has not yet been located, and park officials are continuing to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safety of other visitors.
