At least 24 people have died following intense rains and flash floods that have struck various regions of Pakistan, with the country now bracing for the impact of Cyclone Asna. The cyclone, while not expected to directly threaten the coastal areas, is anticipated to bring strong winds and significant rainfall to Sindh and Balochistan.
On Friday, heavy rainfall caused a landslide in Upper Dir, resulting in the tragic death of 13 family members when their home’s roof collapsed. The incident occurred in Ramyal village early Friday morning. Additionally, nine fatalities have been reported in the districts of Jamshoro, Dadu, and Mirpurkhas in Sindh.
The severe weather has also left more than 30 people injured, as the floods damaged infrastructure, ruptured sewers, breached dykes, and destroyed numerous mud houses. The scale of the disaster has highlighted the urgent need for effective emergency response and relief efforts.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) provided an update at 10:30 pm local time on Friday, indicating that Cyclone Asna was moving westward and was positioned about 120 km south of Karachi, 180 km southwest of Thatta, 250 km southeast of Ormara, and 440 km east-southeast of Gwadar. The cyclone is forecasted to continue moving west-northwest before shifting to a west-southwest direction.
PMD Director General Mahr Sahibzad Khan emphasized the cyclone's historical significance, noting that it is the first storm of this magnitude to form in the region since 1964. The cyclone is expected to bring widespread rains and thunderstorms to Karachi, Tharparkar, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Hyderabad, Tando Mohammad Khan, Tando Allah Yar, Matiari, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Jamshoro, Dadu, and Shaheed Benazirabad districts on Saturday.
Chief Meteorologist Dr. Sardar Sarfaraz added that while the cyclone is currently directed towards Oman, there is an expectation that it may dissipate over the sea. Coastal areas of Balochistan are likely to experience more intense rainfall compared to Sindh. The situation will be closely monitored as the cyclone progresses, with authorities preparing for any potential impacts.
