Several flights faced delays at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi on Monday as heavy fog enveloped the national capital, disrupting flight operations. The Delhi Airport issued an advisory, stating that flights not compliant with CAT III standards might be affected. CAT III is an instrument landing system aiding aircraft in low-visibility conditions.
The airport assured that while landings and takeoffs continued, passengers should contact their respective airlines for updated flight information. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported no major dense fog conditions nationwide, except in Punjab and West Rajasthan.
The IMD mentioned that Amritsar in Punjab recorded zero visibility due to very dense fog, but visibility improved to 100 meters at 5:30 am. In West Rajasthan, Ganganagar and Jaisalmer reported 25 meters and 200 meters visibilities, respectively.
The IMD's advisory highlighted that low visibility procedures were in progress at Delhi Airport, and flight operations were presently normal. Passengers were once again advised to check with their airlines for the latest information.
Earlier on Sunday, Delhi experienced flight disruptions due to a combination of steady drizzle and a thin layer of fog. The Northern Railways reported delays in 17 trains to Delhi from various parts of the country on Sunday, attributing the delays to foggy and misty conditions. The aviation and rail disruptions underscored the impact of adverse weather conditions on transportation in the region.
