A healthy diet plays a big role in how strong and active you feel every day. What you eat affects your heart, your gut, your energy, and even how long you live. To help people understand simple ways to eat better, Dr Jeremy London, a heart surgeon with over 25 years of experience, has shared three easy tips for a more nutritious diet.
Dr London explains that the food you choose has a direct impact on your overall health. Eating wisely can protect your organs, support your muscles, and improve your long-term well-being. He says that a healthy diet does not need to be complicated. It only needs a few basic habits that anyone can follow.
His first advice is to focus on real, whole foods. These include fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and unprocessed meats. He says many people eat too many packaged or ultra-processed foods because life gets busy. But choosing whole foods most of the time is a big win for your body. He also reminds people to drink enough water every day, as hydration keeps the body working smoothly.
The second tip is to eat more proteins and fibre. Dr London explains that protein helps the body maintain muscle strength, especially as we age. Without enough protein, the body loses muscle faster, which can affect daily movement and overall health. Fibre is also very important. It feeds the good bacteria in the gut, which helps digestion and supports heart health. Simple foods like beans, lentils, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are great sources of fibre.
The third point is about understanding calories. Dr London says weight gain, weight loss, and weight maintenance all depend on the balance between calories eaten and calories burned. While many other factors can affect weight, the basic rule stays the same: you must burn more than you eat to lose weight, and eat more than you burn to gain weight. He encourages people to find a long-term eating plan that feels natural and sustainable.
Dr London reminds everyone that each person is different. What works for one person may not work for another. He says the important thing is to choose a diet that supports your health, fits your lifestyle, and can be followed every day.
His message is simple: eat real foods, drink enough water, get enough protein and fibre, and understand your calorie balance. These steps can help you live healthier, feel better, and support your body as you grow older.
