Harris to Concede Defeat to Trump Early Tomorrow Following Election Results

Vice President Kamala Harris is set to concede defeat to former President Donald Trump in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The White House confirmed that Harris will deliver a speech acknowledging her loss at 4 p.m. local time (2:30 a.m. IST on Thursday) at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Earlier in the week, Harris had canceled her planned election night speech when it became apparent that Trump would surpass the critical 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. As results poured in, it became clear that Trump had made significant gains in key battleground states, such as Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Wisconsin, paving the way for his return to the White House.

Trump not only secured a victory in the electoral college but also won the popular vote, marking the first time in two decades a Republican candidate had done so since George W. Bush’s victory in 2004.

In Florida, Trump delivered a triumphant victory speech, addressing a room full of supporters, declaring, “America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate.” He emphasized that his administration would focus on healing the country and addressing issues like immigration and the economy that resonated with many voters.

Despite being considered a formidable candidate, Kamala Harris' campaign was unable to overcome Trump’s strong messaging on key issues. The 60-year-old former prosecutor, who made history as the first woman of color to receive the nomination for president from a major party, raised a record $1 billion for her campaign in under three months. She was also endorsed by high-profile figures such as Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Oprah, and several Republican supporters.

However, Harris struggled to distinguish herself from the Biden administration, which had faced declining approval ratings over its handling of economic issues and foreign policy. Many voters felt they were better off under Trump’s first term, particularly when it came to the economy and jobs. Harris had a limited time to campaign after Joe Biden withdrew from the race in July, while Trump had maintained a strong presence in the political landscape since his initial campaign in 2016.

Harris, who had accumulated 224 electoral votes by Wednesday evening, was not able to generate the momentum needed to overcome Trump, who had 280 electoral votes. While Harris’ loss marks the end of her bid to become the first female president of the United States, her campaign was seen as groundbreaking for its historic nature, focusing on diversity and inclusion.

At 78, Donald Trump became the oldest president to be elected in U.S. history and is only the second to win two non-consecutive terms, joining Grover Cleveland. Trump's victory speech focused on the importance of the political movement he built, which he described as "the greatest of all time." He vowed to continue fighting for the American people and expressed his gratitude for their support.

Trump’s victory has also led to a surge in stock markets both in the U.S. and abroad, including in countries like India, as investors anticipate his economic policies and their global impact.
