Hamas: Israel Killed Hostages During Attack on Central Gaza

The armed wing of Hamas, the al-Qassam Brigades, reported that some hostages were killed during an Israeli operation aimed at freeing captives in Gaza. The statement from Abu Ubaida, spokesperson for the al-Qassam Brigades, was released on his Telegram channel. He claimed, "Israel, by committing horrific massacres, was able to free some of its hostages, yet it killed some others during the operation."

The incident took place at the al-Nuseirat refugee camp and surrounding areas in central Gaza. On Saturday, Israeli forces conducted a raid that successfully rescued four hostages held by Hamas since October. However, according to Hamas officials, over 200 Palestinians were killed in airstrikes in the same area, marking one of the deadliest assaults in the ongoing conflict.

It remains unclear whether the hostage rescue and the Israeli air assault were part of the same coordinated operation, but both events occurred in the densely populated and frequently contested al-Nuseirat area. This region has been a focal point in the eight-month-long war between Israel and Hamas, the ruling Islamist group in the Palestinian territories.

Abu Ubaida warned that such operations pose a significant threat to the remaining hostages and could negatively impact their conditions and lives. "Saturday's operation will pose a great danger to the enemy hostages and will negatively impact their conditions and lives," he added.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has seen numerous casualties and has drawn international attention and condemnation. The recent events in al-Nuseirat highlight the ongoing intensity and human cost of the hostilities in Gaza.
