Hamas Claims Responsibility for Fatal Shooting Attack in Israel

The armed wing of Hamas has claimed responsibility for a deadly shooting attack in Jaffa, near Tel Aviv, that left at least seven people dead and several others wounded. This attack took place just moments before Iran launched a barrage of rockets aimed at Israel, escalating tensions in the region.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas's military wing, described the incident as a "heroic operation" conducted by fighters from Hebron, located in the occupied West Bank. They identified the attackers as Mohammed Misk and Ahmed al-Haimoni, who they claimed managed to "infiltrate into our occupied lands."

The assault commenced when the alleged assailants opened fire inside a carriage of the light rail train that had stopped at a station, targeting passengers indiscriminately. They were armed with an assault rifle and a knife, continuing their attack on foot until Israeli police arrived and "neutralized" them. One of the attackers was shot dead on the scene, while the other sustained serious injuries.

Israeli media reports indicate that among the deceased, three were Israeli citizens, while others included individuals from Georgia, Greece, and Moldova. The identity of the seventh victim remains undisclosed.

In response to the attack, Israeli police arrested several individuals in Hebron and Jerusalem who are suspected of assisting the attackers. The escalation comes as Israel and Hamas continue to engage in fierce conflict, particularly in Gaza, which has seen devastating violence since hostilities reignited on October 7. According to Palestinian authorities, Israeli military operations in Gaza have resulted in at least 41,689 deaths and over 96,625 injuries. Additionally, the conflict has also impacted the West Bank, where Israeli forces and settlers have killed at least 682 Palestinians during raids and attacks since the onset of the latest violence.

This incident and the surrounding tensions illustrate the ongoing cycle of violence that has gripped the region, with the ramifications of the conflict affecting both Israelis and Palestinians alike.
