Representatives from both sides concluded discussions in Cairo without reaching a consensus on a ceasefire agreement for the seven-month conflict in the Gaza Strip. Hamas, the Palestinian group, announced early Friday that its delegation had left Cairo for Qatar, indicating that Israel had rebuffed the proposal put forward by mediators. The ball, Hamas declared, is now entirely in Israel's court.
According to reports from Al-Qahera News, a state-linked Egyptian outlet, both delegations exited Cairo after two days of negotiations aimed at solidifying a ceasefire deal. Despite the lack of a resolution, efforts by mediators such as Egypt, Qatar, and the United States persist in bridging the gap between the two parties.
Earlier, Hamas had signaled its acceptance of a ceasefire proposal outlined by mediators. The terms involved an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the repatriation of displaced Palestinians, and the exchange of hostages for Palestinian detainees held by Israel, with the ultimate goal of achieving a lasting ceasefire.

However, Israel's response was lukewarm. While acknowledging the proposal, Prime Minister Netanyahu's office deemed it inadequate, falling short of Israel's fundamental demands. Despite this, Israel expressed willingness to engage in negotiations by sending representatives to Cairo.
Israel's reluctance to accept a permanent ceasefire stems from its insistence on dismantling Hamas, the ruling authority in Gaza. This precondition underscores Israel's resolve to address what it perceives as a security threat before committing to a long-term cessation of hostilities.
