Hamas Attack Survivor Takes Own Life on 22nd Birthday, Family Says PTSD

Shirel Golan, a 22-year-old Israeli woman who survived the horrific Hamas attack during the Supernova music festival on October 7, 2023, has tragically died by suicide. Reports indicate that Golan, who was battling post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of the traumatic experience, took her life in her apartment on her birthday.

Golan’s family has publicly expressed their outrage towards the Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing it of neglecting the needs of survivors like Shirel. They argue that the state has failed to provide adequate support for those traumatized by the attack. Her brother, Eyal, highlighted Shirel's struggles, noting that she exhibited signs of PTSD, such as withdrawal from friends and family. He stated, "I asked her to take care of herself. She said that she doesn't get any help from the state." He emphasized that the only support she received was from the Tribe of Nova Community Association, a group formed to assist festival attendees.

The family believes that had the government provided necessary care and resources, Shirel's death could have been prevented. Despite being hospitalized twice following the attack, Golan was never officially recognized as suffering from PTSD.

On the fateful day of the attack, Shirel and her partner, Adi, were among the many attendees at the festival when Hamas launched its assault. Initially, they attempted to escape in a vehicle but soon realized they could not safely exit the area. The couple then sought refuge by hiding under a bush for several hours, narrowly avoiding capture. It was during this time that they witnessed another vehicle leave the area, only to later learn that its occupants were killed or kidnapped by Hamas militants.

The Hamas assault on October 7 resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, primarily civilians, and the abduction of 251 individuals. In retaliation, Israel has conducted a military campaign in Gaza that has reportedly claimed over 44,000 lives, according to health officials in the territory.

The ongoing conflict has left many survivors and families devastated, and Golan's tragic death has sparked further discussion about the need for mental health support for those affected by the violence. As investigations continue, the issue of how to care for survivors remains a critical concern, with families like Golan's calling for immediate action and change in government policy to prevent such tragedies in the future.
