Hakan Fidan to Meet Qatari Leaders for Strengthening Ties

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is going to visit Qatar on Sunday. During his trip, he will meet with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, and the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani. The main goal of this visit is to talk about improving the relationship between Turkey and Qatar and to discuss important issues happening in the region.

After their meeting, there will be a joint press conference with the Qatari Prime Minister, where they will share what was discussed.

Hakan Fidan had already visited Qatar earlier this year, in February. Just this month, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, visited Turkey. He came to Antalya, a city in southern Turkey, to join a meeting about the situation in Gaza, which was organized by Fidan.

Turkey and Qatar have become closer over the past ten years, especially since they formed a strategic partnership in 2014. The two countries meet regularly and have signed over 100 agreements in many different areas.

The High Strategic Committee, which is led by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim, last met in Ankara, Turkey, in November 2024. The next meeting of this committee is expected to take place in Qatar’s capital, Doha, later this year.

Both Turkey and Qatar have similar views on several regional problems, particularly regarding Palestine and Syria. Both countries have strongly opposed Israel’s attacks on Gaza and continue to work together to find solutions, both through their own discussions and by participating in international groups like the Gaza Contact Group.

In 2024, the trade between Turkey and Qatar went over $1 billion, showing the growing strength of their relationship.
