Gunmen Kill Senior Official in Vehicle Attack in Southwest Pakistan

QUETTA, Pakistan — On Monday, gunmen ambushed a vehicle transporting a senior government administrator in southwest Pakistan, resulting in his death and injuries to two other individuals, according to police and government sources.

The attack targeted Zakir Baloch, the deputy commissioner of Mastung district in Baluchistan province. The assailants opened fire on the vehicle before fleeing the scene. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the ambush, said Hadahyait Bangulzai, a local police official.

In response to the attack, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Sarfraz Bugti, the top elected official in Baluchistan, condemned the violence. Both officials have directed law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to identify and capture those responsible for the attack.

Baluchistan, a province rich in minerals and natural gas, has experienced frequent militant attacks due to ongoing insurgencies by groups advocating for the province's independence. Authorities continue to investigate the incident as part of broader efforts to address the persistent violence in the area and to enhance security measures for government officials and the general public.
