Greece’s Defense Minister, Nikos Dendias, made the agreement with French Defense Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, during a one-day visit to Athens. The two ministers didn’t share the price of the deal.
This missile deal is just the latest in a series of military purchases that Greece has made from France. Greece has already bought 24 Rafale fighter jets and three Belharra-class warships from France. Dendias also mentioned that Greece is talking with France about buying a fourth Belharra-class warship. In addition, Greece is getting NH-90 military helicopters from France.
Greece plans to spend 25 billion euros ($27 billion) over the next 10 years to update its military. The goal is to improve its defense systems with new technology that is more advanced and up-to-date.
Greece and Turkey are both members of NATO, but they have had long-standing disagreements over areas in the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean. These disagreements have caused tension between the two countries, and there have been times when they almost went to war.
Greece's Defense Minister, Dendias, said that Greece doesn’t want to threaten anyone, but it needs to protect itself. He explained that Greece’s military is preparing for future security challenges by moving from older defense systems to new, high-tech strategies. This will include using smart missiles, drones, and advanced command systems instead of relying only on traditional fleets of ships and planes.
The new military upgrades are part of Greece’s plan to rebuild its defense forces. After a tough economic period from 2010 to 2018, Greece cut back on military spending. Now, Greece is working closely with countries like France, Israel, and the United States to strengthen its defense and be ready for future threats.
