Google Docs for Android gets Gemini AI update

Google is making a big update to its Google Docs app for Android by adding Gemini, its smart AI assistant. This new feature will help users read, understand, and write documents more easily, right from their mobile phones.

Until now, Gemini was only available in Google Workspace tools like Docs, Sheets, and Slides—but only on computers (web version). On mobile phones, only the Gmail app had Gemini support. But that’s changing now.

Starting from June 9, 2025, Google has begun rolling out Gemini to the Google Docs app on Android. The company says all users will get this update by July 2, 2025.

With Gemini, you can do many helpful things inside Google Docs. For example:

• You can get a summary of a long document.
• You can search for specific details in the text.
• You can also ask it to help you write a new document using just a few basic instructions.

To use this feature, simply open a document in the Google Docs Android app. Then, look at the top-right corner of your screen and tap on the Gemini icon. A new panel will appear at the bottom of the screen, giving you different options and a box to type your request.

It’s not yet clear if this upgrade is a part of an app update from the Play Store or if it’s a background (server-side) change. Either way, users don’t need to do anything special—just keep the app updated.

This move is part of Google’s plan to make Gemini a more useful part of its apps, making tasks like reading and writing quicker and easier for everyone—even when you're on the go.
