Mohammad Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Chairman of the World Governments Summit (WGS), recently emphasized the pivotal role the summit has played since its inception over a decade ago. He explained that the WGS has been guided by the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai. Over the years, the summit has successfully established a unique model for fostering national and global partnerships that are centred on the future. These partnerships are built around collaboration and aim to address key societal challenges and serve communities globally.
According to Al Gergawi, the WGS operates with a core belief: the future is a shared responsibility and mission for everyone. He noted that shaping the future while anticipating challenges involves not only having a forward-thinking mindset but also sharing knowledge, experiences, and success stories. Innovation, ambitious visions for various sectors, and creative ideas are critical components of preparing for the future and navigating the complexities of tomorrow’s world.

A major initiative that reflects this collaborative spirit was the recent "Partners Retreat" organised by the WGS. This event brought together Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, who also serves as Vice Chairman of the World Governments Summit. Al Olama, alongside key leaders from 40 partner entities spanning both the public and private sectors—including entrepreneurs—engaged in meaningful discussions during the retreat. The primary focus of the event was to address the key elements for the forthcoming World Governments Summit 2025.
In his remarks, Al Gergawi pointed out that the WGS has become the only global platform that places the future at the heart of well-being and development discussions. He stressed that the summit’s partnerships transcend geopolitical challenges and conflicting visions, focusing instead on a collaborative model that drives sustainable development and prosperity for all. The ultimate aim is to ensure a better, more sustainable future for coming generations.
The "Partners Retreat" served as a comprehensive brainstorming platform where attendees could discuss the topics, directions, and themes that will shape the next edition of the WGS. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that the summit remains dynamic and aligned with current global trends, while also preparing for future challenges. Al Gergawi explained that the retreat contributes to shaping the general framework of the WGS event, enriching its themes with fresh perspectives, and ensuring that it remains relevant in an ever-changing world.
One of the unique aspects of the retreat was its focus on creating an open and interactive dialogue. Partners from various sectors were encouraged to participate in in-depth discussions, ensuring that diverse viewpoints were considered in shaping the WGS agenda. An interactive workshop was also held during the event, where partners from the private sector shared their future visions and insights on key topics that will be covered in the next edition of the summit.
During the retreat, participants were divided into working groups, each tasked with addressing a specific topic related to future trends. These discussions allowed participants to exchange ideas, insights, and practical experiences, helping to enrich the summit’s themes and ensure they reflect real-world trends and innovations. Topics covered included effective governance, government reliability, future financing and the global economy, climate change and crisis management, agile cities, human-centred future and capacity building, global health transformations, and emerging future trends.
In addition to these discussions, participants also explored emerging global trends and future priorities for both public and private sector leaders. They examined the tools and strategies necessary to promote effective partnerships that will help shape the future. The retreat's focus on collaboration between public and private sectors underlines the WGS’s commitment to fostering partnerships that drive positive global change.
The organisation of the “Partners Retreat” is a testament to the World Governments Summit’s role as a platform for facilitating fruitful partnerships. These partnerships are crucial for supporting efforts to shape the future, and the retreat serves as a vital initiative in the ongoing work of exploring major global trends. By engaging stakeholders from a wide range of sectors, the WGS aims to ensure that future developments are aligned with the overarching goal of human prosperity. The summit’s focus on addressing critical global challenges such as climate change, economic transformation, and human capacity building underscores its commitment to fostering sustainable solutions for the future.
The retreat concluded with a shared sense of purpose among participants, who left with renewed dedication to addressing the key issues that will define the future. As the WGS prepares for its 2025 edition, the insights gained from this retreat will play a vital role in shaping the event’s agenda, ensuring it remains a leading global platform for future-centred discussions and collaborations.
