Two individuals, suspected of planning a firearms attack on Sweden’s parliament, were apprehended in Germany on Tuesday, as per the Office of the German Federal Prosecutor's statement. The suspects, identified as Afghan citizens, were arrested near the city of Gera in Thuringia, central Germany, on terrorism charges.
Germany’s Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, revealed that one of the detainees is believed to be an ISIS member, while the other is suspected of supporting the terrorist organization. The Afghanistan Embassy in Berlin expressed readiness to cooperate but stated they had not been informed officially.
According to the German Federal Prosecutor's Office, the suspects allegedly received instructions from an ISIS branch in the summer of 2023 to carry out the attack. It was reportedly in retaliation for Quran burnings in Sweden and neighboring Scandinavian nations. The planned targets included police officers.
The suspects made concrete preparations for the attack, including attempting to acquire weapons and researching conditions in Stockholm, Sweden's capital. They had also collected donations totaling around 2,000 Euros to fund ISIS activities.
The German federal prosecutor indicated that the suspects would appear before the Federal Court of Justice to determine arrest warrants and pre-trial detention. This development underscores ongoing concerns about terrorist threats in Europe and highlights the importance of proactive counterterrorism efforts.
