German Far-Right Party Convenes Amidst Election Success, Faces Opposition Protests

BERLIN — The Alternative for Germany (AfD), a far-right political party, commenced its convention in Essen amidst significant public outcry and large-scale protests. Following a robust performance in the recent European elections where it secured 15.9% of the vote, AfD's gathering saw co-leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla seeking re-election.

Despite attempts by local authorities to prevent the event, AfD prevailed in court, prompting a heavy police presence in Essen. Up to 100,000 protesters were expected throughout the weekend, with various demonstrations aiming to counter AfD's platform.

On Friday, a peaceful anti-AfD rave dubbed “Bass against Hatred” drew around 5,000 participants. However, tensions escalated early Saturday as some demonstrators clashed with police, attempting to breach security barriers. Police responded with pepper spray and batons, leading to several arrests and reports of masked individuals attacking officers.

Protesters also staged sit-ins and blockades near the convention venue, disrupting traffic and causing logistical challenges for delegates. Despite these obstacles, AfD lawmakers managed to attend, some escorted by police due to safety concerns.

Addressing delegates, Weidel criticized the protests, stating they were undemocratic and reaffirmed AfD's commitment to continue their political activities despite opposition. The convention in Essen underscores the polarizing influence of AfD in German politics, particularly in light of upcoming state elections in the eastern regions, where the party aims to consolidate its support base.
