In a tragic incident near the Al-Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza, a humanitarian airdrop resulted in five fatalities and ten injuries as the parachute failed to deploy. The casualties were swiftly taken to Gaza City's Al-Shifa hospital, as reported by the head nurse of the emergency room, Mohammed al-Sheikh.
Eyewitnesses, such as Mohammed al-Ghoul from the Al-Shati camp, recounted the harrowing experience of witnessing the parachute malfunction. Al-Ghoul, who was hoping to receive a bag of flour from the aid drop, described the parachute's failure, causing it to fall rapidly like a rocket onto the roof of a nearby house. Subsequently, three individuals were reported dead, and others injured, who had been on the roof where the aid packages were intended to land.
Amidst the tragedy, the United States and Jordan were mentioned as countries involved in airdrops in northern Gaza. However, a Jordanian military source denied any involvement in the incident, attributing the parachute malfunction to a technical defect that did not originate from a Jordanian aircraft.
The Hamas-run Gaza government's media office expressed dissatisfaction with airdrop efforts, deeming them "futile" and stating that they were not the most effective means of delivering aid. Meanwhile, the United Nations emphasized the inadequacy of airdrops or a proposed maritime aid corridor, stressing the importance of allowing more trucks to reach Gaza through additional border crossings to address the worsening humanitarian situation
